Born February 02, 1977 in Kingston, Jamaica, Sean Glenn is the third of four children for Hilbert and Desrene Glenn; the only boy (3 sisters – Kayon, Tarin and Kamala). He attended Mt. St. Joseph Preparatory and started at Manchester High in Mandeville, Manchester before being transferred to and finishing his high school education at St. Catherine High in Spanish Town, St. Catherine. He currently holds a B.A. in Secondary Teacher Education from Northern Caribbean University (1993-1999). He has taught at two secondary and two tertiary level institutions as well as worked as an Auto Sales Executive, Insurance Sales Executive and a Massage Therapist. He grew up in the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Always very emotive even if not verbally expressive Sean always felt things deeply, even things that people would consider trivial. Although he had an intense love for his immediate family growing up he often felt detached in many ways from a number of things. He is a socialite when needed but a loner at heart. He enjoys playing pool and has a love for the solitude of the ocean. Growing up he was taught to be self sufficient, to value independence in all aspects of life, respect and the importance of honesty. Books were also a main stay in his life and for many years he remained an avid reader.
When asked how he would describe himself when it comes to his artwork, these were his words:
“I would describe myself and by extension my artistic style as an Emotive, Reactionary, Analytical, Representation and Interpretation of my life. Most of my drawings, sketches and paintings come out of this state. I would also have to say that my style is also developmentally conceptual in nature: every piece that I do contains within it a message locked into a particular developmental period of my life and will evoke a degree of interpretation from the onlooker.”
Without the conventional training many artists receive Sean Glenn's development as an artist is truly amazing. Like many students attending high schools in Jamaica, he studied art as one of the compulsory lower school courses but when the time came to choose elective subjects in preparation for the CXC examinations, he opted out of art. Oddly enough his art teacher always said he had a problem following the conventional rules and thus concluded his work would never be any good.
He has never thought of his art in terms of a passion since it was almost always done out of a need to quiet the storm of emotions building up inside him. It was the one thing that he could do to escape whatever feelings he had or was having at that moment. Whether it was a life experience, a lesson from church or from school, an argument at home, a relationship gone awry, seeing situations as they arose and were dealt with by the people, the community or the society around him; anything and everything that was note worthy, problematic or what could not be fathomed, were kept...thought about it...questioned. If there were no answers to questions asked, he searched for them. When the feelings overwhelmed him, he drew.
Many of his sketches have been lost to time and movement with a few exceptions. Since 2009 however, when he started painting again, the “passion” for his art has begun to resurface and mature. Only now can Sean Glenn truly say he is passionate about art. Even though it is still very much an outlet, he now purposely creates.
